The rapid expansion of plantations, agricultural lands, and dams has caused significant deforestation in India. This has led to increased farming pests, disrupted rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and a decline in air quality.
To address these challenges, the Greening Tamil Nadu project was initiated.
What We’re Doing to Help
Launched in 2011 in collaboration with the Japanese Government and India’s Department of Forestry, the Greening Tamil Nadu project has played a pivotal role in our efforts. Over the past 25 years, we have worked with farmers and schoolchildren to plant 1.3 million trees through various initiatives:
Creating forest fields
Trees absorb CO2 and use it to grow their trunks, branches, roots, and leaves, acting as natural carbon sinks. One acre of new forest can sequester approximately 2.5 tons of carbon annually.
VOICE Trust is partnering with motivated local governments and farmers to establish dedicated forest fields aimed at combating greenhouse gas emissions. Fifteen townships across Tamil Nadu have joined the effort to plant thousands of trees in these specially designated areas.
Our collective goal is to ensure a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations.
Tree planting in schools
Educating schoolchildren on the environmental benefits of trees creates both immediate and lasting impacts.
VOICE Trust conducts regular workshops in local schools to foster environmental stewardship in the younger generation. These workshops equip students with the knowledge needed to plant and care for trees while also understanding the broader impact of their actions.
During these sessions, VOICE Trust staff teach children how to nurture saplings and calculate the carbon absorption potential of fully grown trees.
