OUR JOURNEY
Four Decades of Empowering Communities
VOICE Trust's journey began in 1985, rooted in a simple yet powerful belief: true development must be people-centred, nature-centred, and justice-oriented. Established as a secular, non-profit voluntary organisation, VOICE Trust emerged at a time when marginalised communities—small farmers, women, children, persons with disabilities, and the rural poor had limited access to opportunities, rights, and resources.
From its early years, VOICE Trust chose the path of grassroots engagement, working closely with communities rather than imposing external solutions. The organisation steadily evolved by listening to people's voices, respecting traditional knowledge, and nurturing collective action. This participatory approach laid the foundation for long-term trust and sustainable change.
In the 1990s, VOICE Trust expanded its work into ecological and organic agriculture, inspired by the vision of nature-centric living. By promoting poison-free food production, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable farming systems, the organisation supported small and marginal farmers to strengthen livelihoods while protecting the environment. These efforts later grew into state-wide networks advocating ecological agriculture and climate resilience.
Recognising that development is incomplete without social justice, VOICE Trust deepened its focus on women's empowerment, children's rights, disability inclusion, education, health, and nutrition. Community-based rehabilitation for persons with disabilities, care and protection for vulnerable children, youth employability initiatives, and women-led agri-enterprises became integral to its mission.
Over the decades, VOICE Trust has also stood firmly with communities during times of crisis responding to tsunami, cyclones, floods, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond immediate relief, the organisation consistently focused on rehabilitation, livelihood restoration, and resilience building, ensuring affected families could rebuild their lives with dignity.
Today, as VOICE Trust enters its fourth decade of service, it works across hundreds of villages in Tamil Nadu, with outreach in Puducherry and Kerala. Guided by an all-women Board of Trustees, supported by committed staff, volunteers, and strong partnerships with government departments, CSR foundations, and international donors, VOICE Trust continues to evolve while staying true to its core values.
From humble beginnings to wide-reaching impact, the journey of VOICE Trust is one of compassion in action, community leadership, and sustained commitment amplifying the voices of the oppressed and enabling communities to move from vulnerability to resilience, from dependency to self-reliance.

“Founded in 1985, VOICE Trust has spent nearly four decades walking alongside marginalized communities—promoting nature-centric development, social justice, and inclusive growth. Rooted in grassroots action and guided by community voices, our journey reflects a sustained commitment to dignity, resilience, and sustainable futures.”
About VOICE TRUST
VOICE Trust is a grassroots, non-profit organisation based in Tamil Nadu, India, dedicated to empowering disadvantaged and rural communities through sustainable and inclusive development. Since 1985, we have worked closely with people at the grassroots level to enhance lives and restore the environment by combining community participation with practical, eco-friendly solutions.
Our efforts focus on organic farming, environmental education, and climate-resilient agriculture, supporting farmers in adopting sustainable livelihoods. We also run initiatives that empower women, provide care and support for orphaned children and individuals with disabilities, and deliver disaster relief during emergencies.
Through hands-on training, awareness-raising, and community partnerships, VOICE Trust helps communities become more self-reliant, resilient, and environmentally connected. At the heart of all our work lies the belief that lasting change begins within the community—nurtured by compassion, collaboration, and a long-term commitment.

Our Areas of Work
We work across more than 384 villages in Tamil Nadu, with a strong presence in the districts of Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, and Thanjavur. Our focus is on climate-vulnerable, disaster-prone, and underserved regions, where support is most urgently needed.
These areas are identified through a combination of local consultations, vulnerability assessments, and on-the-ground partnerships. We prioritise communities that face recurring environmental challenges, lack basic infrastructure or access to services, or are socially and economically marginalised.
Our approach is deeply participatory. We collaborate with panchayats, farmers’ groups, schools, women’s collectives, and local institutions to co-create solutions that are relevant, inclusive, and sustainable.
