Inclusion and All-Round Empowerment of PWDs (Persons With Disabilities)
When VOICE Trust initiated Development Programs for the Disabled (DPD) in 1998, many people hesitated to disclose details about disabled children or adults in their families, as disability was often seen as a curse from God or punishment for sins. VOICE Trust challenged this belief and organized awareness programs to show that disabilities are often caused by malnutrition, pathogens in air/water/atmosphere, and marriages between close relatives. Over the first 10 years, VOICE Trust facilitated therapy for 241 disabled children, employability skills for 324 disabled adults, and the return to normalcy for 287 individuals with mental illness.
In 2010, VOICE Trust secured the Guide Scheme from the government for the Mannachanallur Block. From 2013, VOICE Trust was appointed as the Block Disability Mitigation and Rehabilitation Facilitating Agency (BDMRFA) for Mannachanallur and Thottiam Blocks. Since 2018, VOICE Trust has provided training for Community Development Facilitators (CDFs) under the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission (TNSRLM) across five additional blocks, assisting 9,222 persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Currently, the organization is advancing towards the integrated empowerment of 47,434 PWDs in the Trichy District. Starting June 12, 2024, the Ezhumin (Rise Up) Special School for Disabled Children will open at the Voice Social Centre for Differently Abled Persons in Siruganur, with guidance from the District Differently Abled Welfare Office of Trichy.
