India’s rapid urbanization has led to a growing waste management crisis. The country generates 60 million tons of solid waste annually, yet only a small portion is collected and treated.
Improper waste disposal can lead to the spread of infectious diseases, air pollution, and blockage of water sources. Biowaste, when properly processed, can be a valuable resource that is often overlooked.
What We’re Doing to Help
VOICE Trust has partnered with the Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu, to tackle plastic pollution, clean up mismanaged waste, and promote the segregation and reuse of biowaste for sustainable farming.
Our key activities include:
Plastics Reduction
We collaborate with the Department of Environment, local communities, and student organizations to:
- Conduct hands-on plastic removal activities.
- Hold workshops that focus on selecting sustainable alternatives to plastics.
- Distribute hundreds of cloth bags to replace commonly used plastic ones.
Community Clean-up
We organize regular Cleanliness Drives, mobilizing children from our Friendship Children’s Home and local schools to clean up streets and public spaces.
Dust to Dustbin Biowaste Recycling
In partnership with Tamil Nadu’s Department of Environment, VOICE Trust educates communities on the importance of waste segregation and biowaste recycling. Our initiatives include:
- Distributing hundreds of dustbins and thousands of informational brochures.
- Conducting workshops on converting biowaste into compost. These workshops have enabled women’s enterprises to generate additional income by selling the compost as fertilizer.
